Today I’d like to share with you music by British composer Henry Purcell (1659–1695). I have to confess I’m not a big fan of Purcell’s music; he’s a bit too baroque for me (maybe once I mature I’ll understand his music). But recently I stumbled on a transcription by conductor Leopold Stokowski of the aria “When I am laid in Earth,” (Dido’s Lament) from Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas for symphony orchestra; and I fell in love with it.
In this transcription the aria is delegated at first to a solo cello and then to violins. This music is simply out of this world.
