Today I would like to share with you Romance for Viola and Orchestra, by German composer Max Bruch (1838-1920).
The viola is the violin’s more petite and sadder cousin. My niece Irene studied the violin from age five, switched to the viola when she was fifteen, and now at twenty-three is studying viola in the graduate program of the Royal College of Music in London. When I asked her why she switched from violin to viola, her answer was, “The violin was too whiny.”
This piece by Bruch certainly highlights the beauty and non-whinyness of the viola. Enjoy.
