We’re diving into timeless arias from Pietro Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana.
Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945) composed Cavalleria Rusticana at the age of 26, and it quickly became an international success. Unfortunately, Mascagni was unable to replicate that success. He composed fifteen other operas that never clicked with the audience – he went into the history books as a one-opera composer. Mascagni died when he was 75 years old, in Rome. I often wonder if sudden success early in his life and the fifteen public failures that followed caused him to have an unhappy life, as creative types tie their self-worth to the public reception of their work.
That being said, Mascagni was active not just as a composer but as a conductor and teacher. If Mascagni tied his identity to being a composer, then he probably considered himself a giant failure (once he had got a taste for international success); but if he looked at himself as a musician, then he saw himself very differently.
