The carnival is a great Schumann piece, but I did have a slight preference for Rubinstein. I may be a little prejudiced as I have a large Rubinstein collection. I think he was one of the five greatest 20th century pianists. He wasn’t always popular… it took a lot of hard work on his part to become really great. I recall him saying how much work he put into playing… he said if he missed just one day of practice, he could tell it, if he missed two days, his wife could tell it, but if he missed three, the whole world could tell it. Wow what dedication! I believe he was forced to retire when his eyesight failed.
